About Palamu Fort
Palamu Fort consists of two magnificent ruined forts located around 3 kilometers from Betla National Park on the banks of the Auranga River. The older fort, built by the Raksel dynasty, predates the Chero dynasty and stands on the plain. The newer fort, built on an adjacent hill, was constructed by Raja Medini Ray of the Chero dynasty.
The plain fort had defensive walls on three sides with three main gates, showcasing the architectural brilliance of its time. During British rule, the East India Company used the fort to hold Narayan Peshwa of Tiroha and Raja Radhakrishna captive after the 1857 revolt.
Palamu Fort stands as a historical monument reflecting the valor and cultural heritage of the Chero kings. Its strategic placement, intricate fortifications, and surrounding natural beauty make it one of Latehar’s most captivating tourist destinations.
