🛕 About Maa Nagar Bhagwati Ugratara Temple
The Maa Nagar Bhagwati Ugratara Temple, also revered as a Tantra Shakti Peeth,
stands along NH-99 between Chandwa and Balumath, about 10 km from Chandwa town.
Nestled at the base of lush, picturesque hills, the shrine is one of the region’s most important spiritual landmarks,
carrying centuries of legend and devotion.
Believed to have been established in ancient times, the temple has historical associations with
Tori ruler Pitambar Nath Shahi and the benevolent Queen Ahilyabai.
Local lore recounts how Pitambar Nath Shahi, while hunting near Mankeri village, discovered two idols—of
Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Ugratara—at Joda Talab. Astonishingly, he had dreamt of these idols
only days before, and moved by the divine vision, he built the temple at this sacred site.
Another tradition speaks of Queen Ahilyabai’s visit to Bengal, during which she resolved to ensure
equal worship rights for all castes. She commissioned the temple to end the exclusion of certain
communities from religious practice, making it a beacon of social harmony.
Today, the temple is famed for its Navratri celebrations, a multi-day festival attracting thousands
of devotees and pilgrims who come to seek blessings and witness vibrant rituals steeped in music, devotion, and tradition.
