Palamu Fort

Category Historic

Palamu Fort are two ruined forts situated 3 km from Betla National Park on the banks of the Auranga River. The old fort on the plain, which pre dates the Chero dynasty, was built by the Raksel dynasty king. The original fort in the plain and the other on an adjacent hill are attributed to the kings of the Chero dynasty. The fort on the plain had defences on three sides and three main gates. The new fort was built by Raja Medini Ray. The East India Company used this fort to hold Narayan Peshwa of Tiroha and Raja Radhkrishna captive after the revolt of 1857. However, it was only during the reign of King Medini Rai, who ruled Palamau for 13 years from 1658 to 1674, that the old fort was converted into a defensive structure.
